How Chiropractic Care Can Help Alleviate Your Recurrent Headaches

Headaches are a common pain condition, and in most cases, the pain is mild to moderate and temporary. But if you have recurrent headaches, your head pain experience is vastly different and can even be disabling.

When you have ongoing head pain, you may turn to medication to find relief. Unfortunately, regular use of headache medication may be part of the problem.

At Apple Wellness Center here in Winchester Virginia, our chiropractor, Michael Pasternack, DC, specializes in easing recurrent headaches without medication.

In this month’s blog, we want to talk to you about recurrent headaches and how chiropractic care can help you get long-term relief.

About recurrent headaches

Every year up to 75% of adults all over the world have at least one headache. But recurrent headaches aren’t the same as that occasional tension headache. People with recurrent headaches experience ongoing head pain — maybe not every day, but several times a year or month.

There are more than 150 types of headaches. Some of the common types of recurrent headaches include:

Tension-type headache (TTH)

Tension headaches are usually brought on by stress or a musculoskeletal problem that involves the neck. The pain from a TTH may last a few hours or a few days, and in some people, the pain is chronic, occurring 15 or more days a month.

Migraines

Migraines cause moderate to severe head pain, usually localized in one area. These types of headaches also cause other symptoms like nausea and vomiting, sensitivity to light, and fatigue.

Migraine pain may last hours or days. People with chronic migraines experience headaches 15 or more times a month.

Medication overuse headaches (MOH)

Regular use of the medication you take to ease your head pain may cause your recurrent headaches. If you have MOH, you may have persistent head pain on most days with the most severe pain occurring first thing in the morning.

Chiropractic care for headaches

Medication is part of the treatment plan for many chronic headaches, but as we already mentioned, medication can make things worse. With chiropractic care, we take a more conservative and hands-on approach to ease your head pain without medication.

Some of the therapies we use to help our patients with recurrent headaches include:

We customize our chiropractic care based on the headache type and frequency and severity of symptoms. But regular chiropractic care may help keep your pain away, reducing your reliance on headache medication.

Care beyond the office

Our chiropractic care isn’t limited to the treatments we provide at the office. Many recurrent headaches have triggers, like migraines and tension headaches.

If you have migraine headaches, we work closely with you to help identify your head pain triggers and provide guidance on how to avoid or manage these triggers. We also provide posture therapy to help reduce stress on your neck that might lead to tension-type headaches.

Regular exercise, drinking plenty of water, and taking nutritional supplements may also help. We provide the guidance you need to incorporate these at-home changes to help you take control of your recurrent headaches.

Don’t let your headaches keep you from doing the things you love. At Apple Wellness Center, we take a holistic approach to health and well-being and can design a plan that eases your chronic pain and improves your quality of life.
